February 21, 2012 – Christopher Brooks
“Roland Hayes: Aframerica’s tenor”
The first on February 21, 2012, will be by Christopher Brooks of Virginia Commonwealth
University. His lecture is entitled, "Roland Hayes: Aframerica's Tenor," and will focus on
the African American tenor, Roland Hayes, the son of a formerly enslaved mother who,
though initially denied the opportunity to perform in the United States, achieved
international fame as a performer and recording artist in the first half of the twentieth
century. Among the catalog of his recordings are spirituals, one of the African American
musical forms that has shaped American popular music. Dr. Brooks' lecture is based on
his forth-coming eponymous biography of Roland Hayes.
