Homeschool Day – May 1, 2015

Join us on May 1, 2015 for Spring Homeschool Day at the Frontier Culture Museum from 9 AM to 5 PM.  Visit our wonderful exhibits and historical interpreters and enjoy great hands-on learning and interactive education.  Get your tickets in advance and avoid the lines!

During Spring Homeschool Day, visitors can expect to see activities such as cooking, gardening, woodworking, flax and wool spinning, rare-breed animals, schoolhouse lessons and more.

Here’s a quick overview of some of the activities scheduled for the day:

Hands-On Learning on the Irish Farm

  • English Farm:
    • Wool processing (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-4:00);
    • Garden work (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-4:00);
    • Lambs onsite
  • West Africa:
    • Foodways (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-4:00);
    • Basket carrying; Yam farming;
    • Goats onsite
  • German Farm:
    • Noodle making (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-4:00);
    • Well activities (10:00-12:00);
    • Garden work (2:00-4:00)

  • Irish Farm:
    • Grinding oats into flour using a quern (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-4:00);
    • Making oat cakes (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-4:00);
    • Flax processing (10:00-1:00 & 3:00-4:00)
  • Irish Forge:
    • Craftsman onsite all day making items out of iron
  • Ganatastwi (Eastern Woodland Indian Site):
    • Games all day;
    • Grinding corn (10:00-12:00);
    • Canoe work (2:00-4:00)
  • 1740s American Farm:
    • Making hurdle fences (10:00-4:00)

    1820s American Farm:

    • Draw bench demonstrations & woodworking (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-3:00)
  • 1850s American Farm:
    • Games in the front yard all day;
    • Quilting – the start of a new quilt

Traditional Food Preparation

  • Schoolhouse:
    • An historic school lesson will take place every half hour throughout the day

The event will take place during our normal operating hours of 9:00am-5:00pm. This is a rain-or-shine event so please dress for the weather. Visitors are also encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to eat at the tables by the Store or main parking lot.
