Spring Homeschool Day – 2016

Join us for Spring Homeschool Day at the Frontier Culture Museum.  Visit our wonderful exhibits with historical interpreters, and enjoy great hands-on learning and interactive education.  Get your tickets in advance and avoid the lines!

Time:  9 AM – 5 PM
Advance Tickets:  $5 Adults; $3 Child; 5 & Under Free
At-the-Door Tickets:  $7 Adults; $5 Child; 5 & Under Free
Annual Pass holders get in free!

During Spring Homeschool Day, visitors will see activities such as cooking, gardening, woodworking, flax and wool spinning, rare-breed animals, schoolhouse lessons and more.

Here’s a quick overview of some of the activities scheduled for the day:

Hands-On Learning on the Irish Farm

  • West Africa:
    • Foodways (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-4:00)
    • Basket carrying
    • Yam farming
    • Goats (the really cute ones)
  • English Farm:
    • Sheep shearing (10:00 & 2:00)
    • Wool processing (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-4:00)
    • Lambs (even cuter than the goats!)
  • Irish Forge:
    • Blacksmith onsite all day making items out of iron

  • Irish Farm:
    • Grinding oats into flour using a quern (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-4:00)
    • Flax processing (10:00-1:00 & 3:00-4:00)
  • German Farm:
    • Noodle making (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-4:00)
    • Well activities (10:00-12:00);
    • Garden work (2:00-4:00)
  • Ganatastwi (Eastern Woodland Indian Site):
    • Games all day;
    • Grinding corn (10:00-12:00)
  • 1740s American Farm:
    • Flint Lock Firing Demonstrations (12:00, 12:15, 12:30, 12:45, 1:00)
    • Making gates (10:00-4:00)
  • 1820s American Farm
    • Draw bench & woodwork demonstrations (10:00-12:00 & 2:00-3:00)
    • Traditional music performances (3:00-5:00)
  • 1850s American Farm:
    • Quilting – the start of a new quilt
    • Traditional salt making from brine
  • Schoolhouse:
    • Historic school lessons will take place every half hour, alternating with traditional games in the front yard

The event will take place during our normal operating hours of 9:00am-5:00pm. This is a rain-or-shine event so please dress for the weather. Visitors are also encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to eat at the tables by the Store or main parking lot.
